• Exam of Lionel Viala - Lionel received a nearly-perfect score on his chemistry test.
• Exam of Pierre Simeoni - Pierre has failed his chemistry examination. A note has been written hastily at the bottom: "Nosotros shall discuss this for the last time. Failure is non an option. Come up speak to me."
• Trail of claret - A blood trail. Information technology looks to have stale to a dark brown.
• Argument of Lionel Viala - Lionel Viala (student of the victim): He seems shocked at the expiry of Professor Marcel. He claims Marcel was only a tough teacher considering he cared deeply for his students.
• Argument of Pierre Simeoni - Pierre Simeoni (student of the victim): Professor Marcel's student Pierre clearly has a grudge confronting him and is not afraid to admit it.

• Key - A cardinal with a tag that says "Office."
• Fifty'avantcourer Periodical - A journal containing an essay by Professor Marcel in back up of the findings of Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier against the phlogiston theory of combustion. It looks as though he disputes the recent findings of Professor Frison, who supports phlogiston theory.

Church

• Statement of the church building deacon - Deacon Manon (banana to the priest): The deacon saw Professor Marcel and Male parent Carriveau arguing oftentimes. He also noticed Marcel was working late yesterday.
• Statement of the preist - Father Carriveau (priest): To say that the Father dislikes Professor Marcel is an understatement. Marcel injected his own thoughts on religion in his lectures, and made enemies of the church building as a result.

Office

• Listing of chemicals - A hand-written listing of chemicals that look to be part of the lesson plan for the day: Muriatic acid, Sulfuric acid, Precision Scale and Drinking glass Vials. Sulfuric acrid is circled.
• Manifesto - A manifesto written past Professor Marcel, it begins: "As a youth I may have been immune to logic, standing to follow the church equally a blind sheep to slaughter. Merely with age, the manus of science reached out to me, and freed me from perpetual ignorance."
• Scrap of paper - A bit of paper. The word "Sulfuric Acrid" has been written in a variety of styles.

School

• Chemical vials - The tabular array is covered in vials filled with a variety of chemicals. They are all neatly labeled every bit either "Ethanol" or "Sulfuric Acid", except the largest bottle of sulfuric acid, whose label is crudely placed and peeling.

Church building

• Deacon Manon (assistant to the priest) To tell you the truth, I'd often hear Professor Marcel and Begetter Carriveau arguing in the street. I did notice the professor was working quite late on my walk home past the school. The candles from his role were lit.
• Father Carriveau (priest) May he kneel before the devil and learn the cost of his blasphemous teachings. He and his students, denouncing our Lord and questioning our holiest truths.

School

• Georges Brion (A caretaker of the Chemistry School Eustache du Gary): Could exist Professor Marcel's experiment went wrong. Just expect at that mess! Such a shame. He was a good man, always made certain to clean up later himself. Non sure how he roomed upstairs with that filthy Professor Frison. That man was raised in a barn.
• Professor Frison (A fellow professor and colleague of Professor Marcel at Chemical science Schoolhouse Eustache du Gary): As a fellow member of the faculty I'k devastated. Equally a friend, heartbroken. Professor Marcel and I roomed together for several years. We shared our offices. Of course we had our differences, but I'k in complete shock.

Culprit

The murderer was Professor Frison, the victim'due south colleague and roommate. Case Summary For i too many years, Professor Frison had been working in the shadow of his friend and colleague Professor Marcel at the chemical science department of Chemical science School Eustache du Gary. When Marcel published an essay in the L'avantcoureur Journal that supported Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier's discrediting of the Phlogiston Theory of Combustion and publicly refuted Frison's own theories, Frison'due south hidden jealousy striking the breaking point. Frison had only a few weeks prior published a newspaper supporting Phlogiston Theory. Knowing that Professor Marcel was highly meticulous, Frison stole his lesson plan for the next twenty-four hour period and learned he was using sulfuric acid in an experiment to make Diethyl Ether. Though this compound is flammable, Frison knew Marcel would be very careful with the mixture. And so while Marcel was tutoring at dark, Frison swapped out the lab's bottle of sulfuric acid and replaced it with nitric acid, a highly explosive chemical. He and then re-labeled the bottle, having painstakingly studied Professor Marcel's handwriting. As a result, the next solar day Marcel inadvertently caused a minor explosion in his own classroom. Fatally injured, he dragged himself into the courtyard, all the while clutching a bible belonging to the Church of Saint Côme. Judging by his published feelings towards the church's priest he seemed to be implying the church played a part in his death. The truth was much closer to abode.
